Hello, paid Lingua Sinica subscribers! Welcome to China Chatbot, where today I focus on state media’s hyping of AI, explore how easy it is to create a fake news video on the Chinese internet, dig into how Chinese bots remember Beijing’s zero-Covid policy, and watch waaaay too many clips of Donald Trump singing Cantonese karaoke than I’m paid to.

Headlines have been crammed the past two weeks, with Chinese media (still) buzzing about the July 4-6 World AI Conference in Shanghai (more on that below), and the ever-expanding fleet of driverless taxis hitting the country’s streets.

But with local authorities expecting more from AI than it currently gives, many are resorting to cookie-cutter products to keep up appearances. The leadership and experts seem to know it, but state media hasn’t gotten the memo.

Enjoy!
